The Goal of God’s Economy

The Work of Christ—the Pearl Gates The gates of the New Jerusalem are pearls. Revelation 21:21a says,

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was, respectively, of one pearl.

Layer after layer of this “life-juice” coats the grain of sand until this valueless irritant gradually becomes a precious pearl.

These pearls, of course, are not literal, physical pearls; rather, they signify the issue of Christ’s person and work in His redeeming death and His life-imparting resurrection for man’s entrance into God’s building. The significance of the pearls lies in the way in which they are formed. A pearl is produced by an oyster on the ocean floor. When a particle of sand finds its way into the oyster, wounding the oyster, the oyster does not expel the particle. Instead, it secretes an organic liquid around the particle. Layer after layer of this “life-juice” coats the grain of sand until this valueless irritant gradually becomes a precious pearl. Christ, like the oyster, came through incarnation into the “sea” of the world. We, like the particle of sand, “wounded” Christ on the cross. Rather than rejecting us, however, He embraced us and covered us with His rich resurrection life. When we first repented to God and believed into Christ, we experienced this pearl, that is, the redemption and salvation of Christ, and this pearl has become our eternal entrance into the holy city.
