The Goal of God’s Economy

A Mutual Dwelling Place—The Tabernacle and the Temple The New Jerusalem is the tabernacle of God and the temple of God (Revelation 21:3, 22). The tabernacle refers to humanity as the dwelling place of God. John 1:14 indicates that when the Lord Jesus put on humanity, He became the tabernacle. The temple, on the other hand, refers to divinity as the dwelling place of man. As the tabernacle, the New Jerusalem is God’s dwelling place; as the temple, the New Jerusalem is man’s dwelling place. Thus, the New Jerusalem is the mutual dwelling place of God with His chosen people. The Lord Jesus revealed this mutual indwelling in John 15:4 when He encouraged His disciples, “Abide in Me and I in you.”

The mutual indwelling implied by the tabernacle and the temple also indicates the union and mingling of God and man. This mingling began with the incarnation of Christ. It continues and expands as each new believer receives the divine life. And as the tabernacle and the temple, the New Jerusalem will be for eternity the ultimate consummation of the mingling of divinity and humanity for the complete fulfillment of God’s economy according to His eternal intention.
