The Steps of God’s Economy

Incarnation

The next major step taken by God to fulfill His economy was incarnation (John 1:14). Before time began, God existed in eternity. He was exclusively divine. Then one day, about two thousand years ago, God stepped out of eternity into time, and He entered with His divinity into humanity. He was conceived in the womb of a young virgin and remained there for nine months. At His birth He possessed not only divinity, but also—for the first time in His eternal existence—the element of humanity. He was born as a God-man with both the divine nature and the human nature.

Through incarnation, Christ brought the infinite God into the finite man. God is infinite, eternal and man is finite, temporal, yet in the incarnation of Christ the two became one. By putting on human nature, Christ bridged the chasm between God and man, to the miraculous effect that God Himself became joined to the human race.
